Facts about Wildebeest Migration

The great wildebeest migration is a spectacular phenomenon in which wildebeests (in their millions) and zebras, impalas, elands, and gazelles (in their thousands) move across the greater Serengeti (Tanzania)-Masai Mara (Kenya) ecosystem in pursuit of water and greener grazing lands. Survival instinct guides the wildebeest migration routes and estimates are that each wildebeest covers nearly 1000km during the movement. This migration usually attracts a huge number of predators – hyenas, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and wild dogs, which makes the spectacle a great sight and a major tourist attraction phenomenon in the world.

This migration is one of the eight wonders of the world, which usually occurs between July and September. During this time, wildebeests move from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Masai Mara. During this period, tourists on a safari witness the wild battles for survival involving wildebeests, zebras, and impalas, and their struggle to survive and wade through the Mara River which is crocodile-infested and numerous predators on land. The mere sight of the huge animal herds rushing their way into the croc-infested Mara River is a sheer marvel. Even more breathtaking and exhilarating is the struggle by a myriad of carnivores attempting to get some prey as the wildebeests, antelopes, and zebras attempt to cross land and the Mara River in search of greener pastures.

The massive crossing across the Mara River is best viewed during the morning hours, usually from 0900 and 1100hrs. Late afternoon can also witness movements of the wildebeest between 1500 and 1600hrs when the animals crisscross the Mara River following traditional routes in which they cover a minimum of 800km. The traditional routes include the Sand River towards the greater Mara region and between the Mara River and the Mara triangle. After crossing, the wildebeests usually gather in huge herds of thousands and only start crossing when their numbers have swollen enough. In fact, the Lion King Movie (filmed in the Masai Mara in Kenya) captures a scene in which the wildebeests are scene migrating from one point to the other. It is in this scenario that Mufasa is thrown down the cliff by his brother Scar, and is trampled upon to his death by the wildebeests.

The great wildebeest migration spectacle is breathtaking and thousands of tourists visit Kenya to witness the phenomenon.
